Carolyn + Mark

A modern, stylish city wedding with a focus on intimate moments and a lively party atmosphere.
I've known Mark for twenty years. We met at a wedding where he was an eager young guest with a camera and a desire to learn. I invited him to pretend he was my assistant photographer for the day, and never could have predicted how monumental that would eventually be. Years since, he's not just a close friend, but he's gone on to reach the pinnacle of success in the documentary filmmaking world, and I couldn't be prouder of him. So when he asked me to photograph his wedding to Carolyn, it wasn't just another booking. It was personal.
What makes their story even more special is that Carolyn and Mark were actually married last year in a private ceremony at a family cottage. This celebration at Terroni Adelaide was their chance to repeat their vows surrounded by everyone they love. Knowing they'd already made that commitment to each other in private gave the whole day a different energy. Relaxed, joyful, and completely about sharing the moment with their people.
Our day began in the heart of the city at Terroni Adelaide. Stepping inside feels like entering a different era, with its grand architecture, soaring ceilings, and the rich warm glow of ambient lighting on dark wood panelling. It's a space with history and character, and it set a stunning, dramatic tone for the first chapter of the day. I arrived early to capture the details of the space before Mark made his entrance. Dressed in a sharp dark suit with a textured white shirt, forgoing a tie for a touch of modern ease, he looked completely at home in the sophisticated setting.
Then, Carolyn arrived. In her classic strapless A-line satin gown, she was the epitome of grace. The moment she and Mark saw each other in the grand hall was quiet and personal. A shared breath before the wonderful whirlwind of the day truly began. We spent time exploring the venue for their first portraits, the clean lines of Carolyn's gown a beautiful counterpoint to the historic textures of the building.
From the old-world elegance of Terroni, we made our way to Fieldwork, a bright, minimalist industrial studio space that offered a complete change of scenery. With its vast white walls, polished concrete floors, and enormous windows flooding the space with natural light, Fieldwork was our modern canvas. It was here that Carolyn and Mark's personalities really came to the forefront.
The atmosphere was relaxed and creative. We started with some beautiful bridal portraits of Carolyn, the simplicity of the studio allowing her and her incredible gown to be the sole focus. One of my favourite moments of the entire day happened here. Mark, ever the supportive partner, playfully picked up a camera to take his own photos of his bride. For a man who has spent his career behind a lens telling other people's stories, watching him turn that instinct toward Carolyn was genuinely moving. It was unscripted and completely them.
After those playful shots, we moved into more intimate portraits. In the quiet of the studio, away from the hustle of the city, they could just be themselves. The simple backdrop allowed every glance and touch to feel significant. Then came the veil. Carolyn added a long, sheer veil with delicate lace edging, transforming her look with a touch of timeless romance. The way the soft fabric caught the light from the studio windows was simply magical.
Soon, the quiet of the studio was filled with the happy chatter of their closest friends and family arriving for group photos. The bridesmaids each wore a dress that reflected her own style, creating a beautiful collection of personalities and silhouettes. The groomsmen were equally sharp in their varied suits. We moved through formal family portraits and then into more relaxed groupings, the bright open space of Fieldwork is perfect for easy interaction.
With portraits complete, it was time to head back to Terroni Adelaide, where the celebration was about to begin. The venue, which had been our quiet portrait location just hours before, was now buzzing with the excitement of cocktail hour. Guests mingled throughout the beautiful space, catching up with old friends and making new ones, the air filled with anticipation for the evening ahead.
As guests found their seats for dinner, the room took on a warm, intimate glow. Carolyn's father opened the speeches with a heartfelt welcome, followed by Carolyn and Mark repeating the vows they had made at their private ceremony, this time with everyone being a part of their story. Mark's parents also shared beautiful words. Throughout the speeches, my lens was drawn to the reactions around the room. There were tears of happiness, knowing smiles, and bursts of laughter. All the small, authentic moments that tell the real story of a wedding day.
And then, it was time to dance. Carolyn and Mark took to the floor for their first dance, a perfect, free-spirited moment just for them in a room full of their favourite people. As the live band kicked in and the party officially started, the dance floor filled instantly and stayed that way all night.
I've photographed a lot of weddings over twenty years. But there's something different about being a part of a good friend's wedding. Carolyn and Mark's day was a beautiful narrative of contrasts. Historic and modern, intimate and energetic, elegant and fun. It was an honour to be the one behind the camera for them.
