Insight into Wedding Photojournalism & Highlight Image Gallery
Wedding Photojournalism in Toronto has been a buzzword for years. Most couples want anything but the cheesy posed wedding photography they see in their parent’s wedding album. This desire has led clients (who otherwise might never have considered their preferred photography style) to start researching different wedding photography approaches. The Eastcore has created a style that is a blend of wedding photojournalism and street photography.
So, What is Wedding Photojournalism?
This style is directly taken from the term journalism, which simply means to document a story. In the news, photojournalists arrive at a newsworthy event to tell the story through their images.
In the case of wedding photojournalism, the photographer has been commissioned to tell your story.
A true wedding photojournalist will be committed to capturing the real moments that compellingly document your day. It is their objective to document the day in a way that connects you and your loved ones to your love story for years to come, while also considering the light, composition as well as any religious or cultural moments of meaning.
At The Eastcore, we are passionate about this approach to photography. After almost four combined decades of experience in the wedding photography industry between Jamieson Dean and Matthew Boyce (founders and partners), they have found that this is the most authentic and transcendent way of capturing such an important life event.
In the early years as new photographers on the wedding scene, they felt the pressure to produce images and recreate the style of more traditional photographers that brides were being marketed. It stole the joy of creativity out of their work, which is what ultimately drives them. The work felt inauthentic. As they grew and honed their skills, they found that the sweet spot was “looking for the light” on moments that mattered. Moments that were real and would remind couples of why they fell in love, how their day actually went and the way they organically interacted with family and guests.
That being said, there are necessary shots to be captured, regardless of whether they naturally occur or not. Jamieson and Matthew know that family shots and dress shots, etc., are important to the retelling of any wedding day. For the “must-have” photos Jamieson and Matthew take more of a street photography approach. This means that instead of creating an image from their direction, they create it through interaction. This is where their skill and experience come in and what sets them and their team apart from other studios. They believe in working hard to build a rapport with their couples that makes interacting easy, resulting in natural-looking photos.
